How to Brew the Perfect V60 Pour Over Coffee: A Step-by-Step Guide
Brewing coffee with the V60 takes me back to the beginning of my coffee journey. It was my introduction to the world of specialty coffee, transforming a simple hobby into a deep, passionate love for every cup I create.
While I’ve explored various brewing methods and experimented with different equipment, there’s something special about returning to the fundamentals.

This pour-over coffee recipe focuses on simplicity and the essentials. We’ll use a 1:15 coffee-to-water ratio, with a brew time of 2.5 to 3.5 minutes, aiming for a balanced and flavorful cup. The process starts with blooming the coffee grounds, followed by a gradual pour of the remaining water, allowing the flavors to develop fully.
Whether you’re an experienced barista or a coffee lover new to pour-over brewing, this recipe provides a taste of the simplicity and precision that make specialty coffee so appealing. It’s a fantastic way to highlight the unique characteristics of your favorite coffee beans.
Ingredients for V60 Pour Over
- Coffee beans – Use Arabica beans with a medium to light roast for the best flavor profile. Freshly roasted beans are highly recommended.
- Filtered water – Quality water significantly impacts the taste of your coffee. Always use filtered water.
Step-by-Step Guide: How to Make a V60 Filter Coffee
Follow these simple steps to brew a delicious V60 pour-over coffee:
Step 1: Heat the filtered water to a temperature between 93-96°C (200-205°F). This temperature range is ideal for extracting the best flavors from the coffee grounds without burning them.
Step 2: Accurately weigh out 15 grams of your chosen coffee beans. Grind the beans to a medium consistency, similar to coarse sand. A consistent grind size ensures even extraction.

Step 3: Place a V60 filter into the Hario V60 Coffee Dripper. Rinse the filter thoroughly with hot water. This preheats the dripper and removes any papery taste from the filter that could affect the coffee’s flavor.

Step 4: Discard the rinse water from the cup or server below the dripper. Place the Hario V60 Coffee Dripper on a scale, ensuring it is stable. Add the ground coffee to the filter and gently level the coffee bed.
Step 5: Tare the scale to zero. Start the timer as you begin pouring water. Pour 40 grams of the heated water over the coffee grounds in a spiral or zigzag pattern, ensuring all the grounds are evenly saturated. This is the “bloom” phase. Allow the coffee to bloom for approximately 45 seconds. During the bloom, carbon dioxide is released from the coffee grounds, creating a bubbling effect. This step is essential for optimal extraction.

Step 6: After the bloom, continue pouring the remaining water in a slow and steady spiral motion. Start from the center and work your way outward, then back towards the center. Maintain a consistent water level throughout the pouring process. Aim to reach a total of 225 grams of water.

Step 7: Once you’ve added all the water, gently swirl the dripper to ensure even saturation of the coffee grounds. Allow the coffee to finish dripping through the filter. The entire brewing process, from the initial pour to the final drip, should take between 2.5 and 3.5 minutes.
Step 8: Remove the dripper and pour your freshly brewed coffee into a serving cup. Take a moment to appreciate the aroma before taking your first sip. Enjoy the rich and nuanced flavors of your perfectly brewed V60 coffee.

Barista Tips for the Best V60 Coffee
Why Swirl at the End?
Swirling the coffee dripper gently at the end of the pour-over process helps to create a more even extraction. This distributes the coffee grounds more uniformly and ensures that all the coffee particles are fully immersed in the water. By promoting a consistent flow of water through the coffee bed, swirling allows for a better development of flavors, resulting in a more balanced and flavorful cup of coffee.
Understanding the Blooming Phase
The blooming phase is a critical step in the pour-over coffee brewing process. When hot water first comes into contact with the freshly ground coffee, it releases trapped gases, primarily carbon dioxide. This release creates a bubbling effect, which is why it’s called “blooming.” Wetting the coffee bed evenly during this phase is crucial for achieving an even extraction throughout the entire brewing process. By ensuring that all the coffee grounds are thoroughly saturated, the water can penetrate the grounds effectively, setting the stage for a flavorful and balanced brew.
